RAC Satnav 220 review published

The RAC's Satnav 220 breaks the mould in two important respects.

It has a screen measuring five inches from corner to corner. That is vast for a satnav device, and I found while it made for bulky and heavy hardware it also lent itself to easy viewing which is crucial when you are behind the wheel.

It also has simply the best system for searching for locations I have ever seen. You type in part of of where you are searching for - 'stre' instead of all of street, 'Bir' instead of all of Birmingham, and it offers up suggested matches. It even works for POIs (enter 'hosp Bir' for hospitals in Birmingham for example).

Because the device covers all of Europe you could find yourself trawling through quite a lot of near matches, but a little experience teaches how few letters you can get away with entering successfully. Coupled with seven digit postcode searching finding destination locations is super-easy.

This satnav device doubles as a handsfree kit for your mobile phone using its built in Bluetooth, can play MP3s and bizarrely, can be hooked up to a TV or DVD player for its screen to be used for viewing.
